Frequently Asked Questions

If you want the lowest magnification for the furthest field of view, maximum viewing range at night and accessories to mount to a G24 Wilcox style helmet, check out the Prowl and Swift 2 lines.

All Nightfox devices have inbuilt infrared LED emitters. Those with 850nm are best for long range viewing at night, while those with 940nm are better for stealth. The main differences between the wavelengths of IR light is that the 850nm provides a further maximum viewing range at night, but produces more visible red glow, and the 940nm wavelength produces less visible glow but provides less boost to viewing range at night. The Swift 2, Swift 2 Pro and Prowl all have dual IR so you can switch between the wavelengths for the best of both worlds. All our devices, regardless of which IR wavelength they emit, can detect both wavelengths when an external IR source, such as a Nightfox XB5, is used.

'Binoculars' and 'goggles' are quite often interchanged when it comes to night vision. However, the Nightfox website uses 'binoculars' to refer to handheld devices which can also be mounted onto a tripod. Goggles can be mounted from above onto a helmet or head mount, enabling the user to keep both hands free.

This depends on what you want to use your night vision for. 1x magnification gives you a wide field of view, so you can see your immediate surroundings. If you want the lowest magnification for the furthest field of view, for head and helmet mounted devices check out the Prowl and Swift 2 lines, and if you want a tripod-mounted device for bat surveys check out the Whisker. 3-4x magnification allows you to see further ahead and is ideal for wildlife and security surveillance. Check out our Corsac and Vulpes lines.

Digital night vision devices are significantly cheaper to manufacture and easier to maintain, making the devices much more affordable both to buy and to own. While digital devices typically don't give the same performance as traditional night vision devices, Nightfox aims to bridge that gap. There are also much fewer restrictions on the transit and ownership of digital devices. Digital devices can't be damaged by overexposure to light, like image intensifier night vision can. You can use Nightfox devices day and night.

Digital night vision is more reliant on a source of infrared light to produce a clear image. All Nightfox devices have an integrated IR LED to emit infrared. Other night vision devices will be able to see your IR signature. Our newest models - like the Swift 2, Prowl and Corsac 2 - have the ability to see at night without the IR LED, when there is sufficient ambient light, using Nightfox's Lunarsight technology.
